The Sharing Place has been successful over the past twenty years largely in part due to our tremendous volunteers. We are truly grateful for the creativity, talent, energy and dedication of our volunteers. It is our hope that each volunteer benefits in their own way from their experience. As you can see from the chart, volunteers provide an overwhelming amount of time providing grief support to those we serve.
We welcome you or your group to assist once, ongoing or to be "on call" depending on your availability and our needs. All volunteers are encouraged to take a brief tour of The Sharing Place to better understand what we do and how your service will be of value.
Here are some of the ways volunteers typically contribute:
- Grief Support Group Volunteer (Read below for more info: "What is a Grief Support Group Volunteer?")
- Ongoing Help - Program preparation, office help, technology, cleaning and organizing, building maintenance, sewing, crafting, building, etc.
- Fund Raising – Annual events and ongoing fundraising efforts
- Custom and Seasonal Projects - For an individual or group (learn more about Service Projects)
- Board of Directors, Advisory Board, and Program Committee – Strategic Planning & Direction.
What is a Grief Support Group Volunteer?
An incredible opportunity and a huge commitment! Grief support group volunteers work with the children, teen and adult support groups which meet at The Sharing Place. All grief support group volunteers complete an extensive, professional training session and complete a background check prior to volunteering.
Each of the 14 grief support groups is led by a Grief Support Group Coordinator, with several volunteers assisting. Currently there are 110 support group volunteers -- men and women ranging in age from 21 to 78, who have varied backgrounds, interests and careers. Many of our volunteers know from experience what grief feels like, some simply want to gain a better understanding of grief, while others just want to help children in some significant way. Individually and together, the volunteers are what make The Sharing Place the wonderful place it is!
About Volunteer Training
- Training is offered twice a year, typically in January and August
- Advanced registration for training is required. A $50 non-refundable fee is required with your registration, with an additional $50 due upon completion of training (limited scholarships or payment plans are available upon request)
- Our professional, highly-respected staff and invited guest grief specialists present this excellent training/workshop
- Following the 18-hour required training and review, each volunteer is placed in a group according to their availability and our needs
- We ask for a minimum 10-month volunteer commitment (3 ½ hours twice per month) to provide continuity within the grief support groups
- For the safety and security of those we serve, and as required by law, volunteers must successfully complete a background check before assisting with a grief support group
